Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more.

CCA President's Note

Hello all,

First, news about ongoing efforts to reauthorize the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor.  Our legislation passed out of the US House of Representatives in December as part of a larger bill and is now in the Senate – exactly where it was when we updated you last! So at least we haven’t lost ground.

Thank you to all of you who have contacted Senators Durbin and Obama to support the re-authorization.  Several people have asked me lately what they can do.  Please continue to contact our senators and representatives to keep the corridor in the forefront of their minds. Also if you know Congressman Hastert, please contact him and let him know how important continued funding for the heritage corridor is for Illinois.

Twenty-five of the total 27 heritage corridors and heritage areas received funding last year; there is no reason the I&M Canal should be left out.  Please continue to let us know of your advocacy and the responses from our elected officials.

On another note, our condolences to the family of Raymond “Dick” Kindelspire. Mr. Kindelspire, of Morris, was a fisherman and a fan of the canal. His family felt an appropriate memorial to him would be to direct gifts in his honor to the Canal Corridor Association. A heartfelt thank you to his family and to his friends who sent their support.

Ana B. Koval

President & CEO

Canal Fact

Little is known about the Illinois Indians.  Composed of a dozen related tribes, their culture was largely exterminated by 1800.  There is very little evidence that the Illinois made their last stand and starved to death atop Starved Rock in 1769.

The Spring 2006 Dinner/Lecture Series at the Gaylord Building Starts Tomorrow

This Thursday, February 23 you have a great opportunity to hear “The Legend of Starved Rock – Fact or Fiction” by Mr. Mark Walczynski of the Illinois Dept of Natural Resources.  Was the Illinois tribe of Indians exterminated at Starved Rock in 1769?  Mark will explore this topic with us based on his research of period documents, witness statements and archaeological reports.  As usual we have two great dinner choices prepared by the Public Landing Restaurant, chicken parmigiana or slow-roasted prime rib au jus.  Call Pat at 815-588-1100 to make required reservations. Come alone or bring a friend, you’ll be sure to have a good time

Next up on March 16th is a very exciting lecture by our historian Ron Vasile entitled “Trilobites, Tully Monsters and Giant Beaver: Echoes of the Past in the I&M Canal Corridor”.  You don’t want to miss this!

The conclusion of the series will feature the renowned musical group Gallimaufry as they entertain us with songs and stories of life on the Canal.  This will take place on April 20th.  As always, the delicious dinners will be provided by the Public Landing Restaurant.  Look for more information on these events in upcoming eNews issues.

Interpretive Plan Now Available for the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor.

After more than a year of hard work by many corridor partners, the updated I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor Interpretive Plan is now complete.  The 175+ page document begins with an overview of the status of interpretation in the corridor, and highlights the progress made since the last corridor interpretive plan was written in 1988.  This is followed by an interpretive framework for the corridor, with a brief canal history, its national significance, basic canal facts, and a corridor timeline.  Extended themes and storylines for the corridor are included.  The plan then identifies new and enhanced site opportunities for telling stories, and concludes with an annotated bibliography.  Site inventory forms for each of the interpretive sites in the corridor are also included.  Even the most avid canal corridor buffs will find new information and perspectives here, and we hope that this document will enlighten others about the rich history of the corridor.

Corridor organizations that participated in developing the Plan will be provided a copy.  If you would like your own copy, please call Pat at 815-588-1100.   Hardcopies of the Plan are $30 and a CD version is $15, both prices include shipping.
